SpaceX is planning one of the most ambitious space infrastructure projects ever announced: a massive new launch complex on the Louisiana Gulf Coast that could transform how frequently rockets are launched into space.

The company announced plans on August 25, 2026, to invest $100 billion in a new facility called Starbase Louisiana, located near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029.

A 125,000-Acre Spaceport

Starbase Louisiana is planned to cover approximately 125,000 acres, making it more than eight times the size of Manhattan.

The enormous complex is being designed as a largely self-sustaining spaceport. Plans include multiple Starship launch pads and towers, propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing facilities, deep-water shipping infrastructure and potentially an airport.

At full scale, SpaceX plans for five launch complexes, each containing two launch pads, giving the site 10 planned launch pads.

Built for Thousands of Starship Flights

The biggest goal is launch frequency.

SpaceX says the Louisiana facility will eventually be capable of supporting thousands of Starship flights every year. Elon Musk has also described a future in which Starship could fly more than 30 times per day, although reaching that cadence will require major advances in vehicle reliability, turnaround time, infrastructure and regulatory approvals.

This is important because SpaceX’s long-term plans depend on Starship becoming a rapidly reusable transportation system rather than simply a conventional expendable rocket.

If Starship can eventually launch, land, be inspected and fly again at extremely high frequency, the cost of sending cargo and people into orbit could fall dramatically.

Why Louisiana?

The location offers several advantages for SpaceX.

The facility will sit along the Gulf Coast, providing a large area over which rockets can fly safely toward the Gulf. Louisiana also has access to natural gas, which SpaceX plans to use in producing methane-based rocket propellant.

The planned deep-water shipping infrastructure could also allow large Starship vehicles and other equipment to be transported by sea.

SpaceX is also planning to make the facility largely self-sufficient, reducing its dependence on outside infrastructure.

Starship, the Moon and Mars

Starbase Louisiana is not simply about launching satellites.

SpaceX sees Starship as the foundation for a much larger space transportation system.

The vehicle is being developed for missions to Earth orbit, the Moon and eventually Mars. NASA is also relying on a Starship-derived lunar lander for the Artemis program, making Starship an important part of America’s plans for returning astronauts to the Moon.

A high launch rate could also be critical for missions requiring orbital refueling. A lunar or deep-space Starship may need additional tanker flights to transfer propellant in orbit before traveling farther from Earth.

The Next Generation of Starlink

Starship is also expected to play a major role in SpaceX’s future Starlink strategy.

The company’s current Starlink constellation has largely been deployed using Falcon 9. Starship, however, is designed to carry much larger payloads, potentially allowing SpaceX to deploy significantly more capable next-generation satellites.

SpaceX has also discussed using Starship to support a much larger orbital computing and artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

That means Starbase Louisiana could eventually become a key launch hub not only for space exploration but also for SpaceX’s satellite and AI ambitions.

Thousands of New Jobs

The project could also have a major economic impact on Louisiana.

Louisiana Economic Development says the project is expected to create approximately 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with an average annual salary of about $92,600. The state estimates the project could generate more than 8,100 indirect jobs, bringing the potential total to more than 11,000 new job opportunities in the region.

For Louisiana, the project represents a major expansion of the state’s aerospace industry and could bring new investment, engineering opportunities and supporting businesses to the region.

Environmental Concerns

The scale and location of the project also bring environmental questions.

The planned site is located in a sensitive coastal region containing wetlands and habitats used by migratory birds. Environmental groups have raised concerns about the potential effects of construction, rocket launches, noise and other activity.

SpaceX says significant portions of the property will remain natural wetlands and has pledged environmental protection, restoration and stewardship efforts. The company has also highlighted plans to help restore coastal marshland and support the surrounding ecosystem.

Balancing an enormous spaceport with the protection of Louisiana’s fragile coastline will be one of the project’s biggest challenges.

A New Chapter for Starship

Starbase Louisiana is still years away from its first launch, and SpaceX has significant technical and regulatory challenges ahead.

But if the company succeeds, the facility could fundamentally change the scale of spaceflight.

A launch complex capable of supporting thousands of Starship missions per year would be something very different from today’s spaceports. Instead of treating rocket launches as relatively rare events, SpaceX is envisioning a future where launching into orbit becomes a high-frequency operation.

From Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, Starship could eventually carry satellites into orbit, deliver cargo to the Moon, support NASA’s Artemis missions and potentially help establish the infrastructure needed for humanity’s journey toward Mars.

The countdown to Starbase Louisiana has not started yet—but the construction of what SpaceX calls a new gateway to the stars is now officially on the horizon.
